Swallowtail Farms, Inc. has developed a unique formula (liquid solution) and special procedure to help reduce the protozoa Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (Oe) from monarch breeding operations. This product is intended for experienced butterfly breeders. The Oe Solution package includes detailed instructions with photographs that show the breeder exactly how to use the sterilization product in the egg washing phase of operations. One gallon of concentrate makes 20 gallons of solution!
The formula was perfected along with the exact method and proven to eliminate Oe, over the course of several years in Swallowtail Farms' breeding operations. After numerous requests from commercial breeders, Swallowtail Farms made this product available to butterfly farms. Without adequate sterilization and disease control procedures in place, in a short time the breeding facility will be infected and livestock will perish.

February 16, 2001 To Whom It May Concern: I have been trying to raise Monarch butterflies on Guam since December of 1999. I began by collecting "wild" chrysalis. It was my hopes that I would have the butterflies emerge, they would mate, and I would be well on my way to making money selling butterflies. This could not be further from the truth! Once I learned about the protozoa that affects the Monarch butterfly, Ophrycystis Elektroscirrha (Oe), I began testing the butterflies using the "tape and magnifier" method. I found that 100% of the butterflies I tested were infected with the disease. I tried everything I could think of to rid the butterflies of the disease, but nothing seemed to work. No matter what I have used over the past year, I had between a 90% and 95% mortality rate with my caterpillars. I was just about to give up on the butterfly raising business when I decided to give it one more "last ditch" effort. I cleaned everything as I had before and I made a batch of Swallowtail Farm's "Oe Solution." WOW!! My caterpillar survival rate instantly jumped to 90%! Of the over 100 butterflies that I have had emerge in the past two months, only two have shown any signs of Oe. I could not have obtained this high level of survivability without the Oe solution.
